We had our first full week in a few weeks! We are continuing to work on E + R = O and getting our minds right. This week we focused on positive self talk to help us with an above the line response which in turn will hopefully give us a positive outcome! Ask your child what all of this means! :)

Reading - We continued to work on our nonfiction interactive notebooks. This week we worked on questioning using who, what, when, where, why and how? We also worked on identifying author's purpose (persuade, inform, entertain) and were introduced to several text structures including description, compare and contrast, order and sequence, problem and solution, and cause and effect. We dove a little deeper into description using a passage about penguins and into compare and contrast.
Writing - Our spelling focus this week was on ea. It can sound like short e as in head or long a as in great! Our mentor sentence came from Owl Moon. We touched on similes and possessives as well as our continued focus on capitals and ending punctuation. We also continued our nonfiction animal research. Students found facts about their animal and then had to sort them, giving each stack a category name. As we begin writing the report, students used/will use their category name as they heading for each paragraph of their report.
Math - Sweet Treats continue. We are almost out of time to complete our facts for the ice cream sundae party! Students have until the end of the quarter to master x2-x12, We continued Topic 12 as wee worked with line plots to the nearest 1/4 and 1/2 inch. We took our assessment on Topic 11 and continued with Topic 12, equivalent fractions using area models.
Social Studies - We continued our cultural study, focusing on Hispanic Americans in Ohio.
Science - This, week we started reading a book about matter, discussing properties of solids, liquids, and gases as well as the ability to change matter from one state to the next using temperature.
